The above instructions look good. I can now associate with my access point, and everything seems to work. Strange that you actually have to compile the kernel. I went ahead and did that, just to be safe, but I would think that shouldn't be necessary. Also, maybe it's just me, but I wasn't able to run:

apt-get install ndiswrapper-source

instead I used:

wget http://<sourceforce-mirror>/ndiswrapper-1.37.tar.gz

Yea looking at it now I don't think I had to compile the source but just have it installed. as for the apt-get I wasn't too sure what it was as I'd downloaded it and had it on usb-key.

Glad to hear it all worked :)

I'm looking for someone to test ndiswrapper in the next release. Please PM me if interested.

I still can't get my wireless to work.

I have a netgear PCI wireless card (not a pcmcia card) I think it's the WG311.

I downloaded the headers and recompiled. Lirc is working nicely. I downloaded ndiswrapper and compiled that according to the instructions in this thread, and that SEEMS to work. I grabbed the listed driver for my version of the card off "the list", and used ndiswrapper to install it. Ndiswrapper tells me the hardware is present and the driver is present. However, when I run modprobe, I get nothing.

I noticed in my network/interface file that wlan0 isn't listed at all. I tried to add it. Now i'm seeing when I reboot that the system is complaining that wlan0 doesn't exist. I looked through /dev and it's not there. is it Ndiswrapper that's supposed to get the card up and running by that point? or does ndiswrapper's function kick in later? Do I need to make sure ndiswrapper is loading at some specific point in the boot sequence? what file is it that I'd need to check?

I'm thinking that either the wireless card hardware isn't setting itself up properly enough to appear in /dev, or maybe it's setting itself up as something other than wlan0. I saw something about ath0 in one thread - is that another name for a wireless device? How do I know if my wireless card driver is even working after ndiswrapper says it's there and loaded?

I apologize for the little detail, I'll come back and add more when I get a chance to get my hands in the box again (wife is using it now)... I'm just totally lost. Everything i 've read says it should be working, and noone else has described the failure point I'm getting.

I've got a wg311v3 and use the driver on the CD-ROM that shipped with the card and it works fine. Maybe you're using the wrong WG311 driver?

What do you get when you type
Code:
ndiswrapper -l

I'm not sure what instructions you followed to compile/install ndiswrapper, but I've used these:
http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/medi ... ebianSarge
successfully.

BTW: I believe ath0 usually refers to an atheros-based card using the madwifi drivers.

Hi everyone,

I compiled ndiswrapper from the debain-packages.

ndiswrapper and tools were installed by default as it seems. I only needed to install ndiswrapper-source to be able to compile the modules:

Code:
apt-get install ndiswrapper-source

Obviously, you need some internet connection for this to work.

Take a look at /usr/share/doc/ndiswrapper-source/READEME.Debian and follow the instructions. Basically, untar the source, cd to the directory and then simply run
Code:
m-a prepare

check for any errors (I had followed the other suggestions in this thread which had not worked for me so I had to delete the symlink /usr/src/linux), run it again if you encountered errors, and then run
Code:
m-a a-i ndiswrapper

That's it. Works like a charm. BTW if you use wpasupplicant and -- like me -- upgraded from an ancient version: the configuration-files are now obsolete and the wpasupplicant driver-interface is no longer "ndiswrapper" but "wext". Instead you simply configure it like any other nic in /etc/network/interfaces with some additional options. See /usr/share/doc/wpasupplicant/README.modes.gz for details on options.
