I made the mistake of making two major changes to my MythTV setup at one time:

1) I changed to a dedicated backend system, with two frontends feeding off the backend (which has all the tuners and the storage)

2) I upgraded all systems to R5E50 from R5D1

Now, when I use XvMC on the frontends, I get stuttering audio while viewing HDTV. I know the following:

-It is not a network bandwidth issue. Watching 1080i content never goes above 3.5MBps (about 28Mbps), while I have tested the network up to 85Mbps w/ FTP, SMB and NFS.

-While using "standard" decoding (as opposed to XvMC), my frontends (P4 2.8/800/HT) play all HD content perfectly. Thus, it is not a processing power issue.

-CPU usage is 40-60% while watching 1080i HD, both using Standard and XvMC decoding methods.

-I have turned on extra audio buffering in playback settings and aggressive sound card buffering in general settings. Neither helps/hurts.

Call me crazy, but I prefer the visual quality of XvMC to standard decoding! Is there a nvidia driver issue here?

My frontend hardware (both systems):
P4 2.8/800/HT
512MB DDR SDRAM
Geforce4 MX440 AGP
Integrated sound/network

My backend hardware:
P3 1.4/133/Tualatin
640MB SDRAM
Intel PRO/100 NIC
2x250GB in Raid0
2xAvermedia M179 on Comcast Analog
1xFusion HDTV5 RT-Lite on Comcast QAM
1xAvermedia A180 on Comcast QAM

There are several things I had to do (done in the listed order) before xvmc would work with HDTV playback in r5e50:

1. apply fix detailed in tjc's r5e50 guide (known issue #10):
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13108&highlight=

3. download kernel source and recompile kernel:
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13281

4. update nvidia drivers to version 1.0-9746:
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13443&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15

5. edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file per the instructions in this thread:
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13550

Well, after looking at the above suggestions, it seems like I cannot upgrade my nvidia drivers, as the 9xxx series does not work with the Geforce4 MX series.

Any other suggestions as to how I can fix this audio glitching? It is not a CPU/net performance issue, so there must be a setting I can change or hack I can do to make this work! It worked perfectly under R5D1 with a standalone combined be/fe.

You should make sure that you fix "known issue #10" listed above. If you don't, then xvmc is NOT functional in R5E50.

If that doesn't help, you could spend $35 on a new nvidia 6200 AGP card.

One of the developers or testers of KnoppMyth will have to try and explain what changed from R5D1 to R5E50. That is out of my area of expertise.

You are correct, in that "#10" above does make XvMC functional. Without it, it does not work correctly at all.

Any other input on my problem? It seems like I may be sunk with Geforce4 MX hardware, although I certainly hope not!

No. I'm out of ideas. In my mind, the $35 nvidia video card route is the cheap/easy fix. (After all, who wants to rely on a video card that isn't supported by nvidia any more?? Not me!)

Good luck.

OK. Went with the prevailing wisdom here and bought + installed a GeForce 7100 PCIe (updated mobo+cpu while I was at it). Problem was, when I updated the drivers, I got a yellow screen upon startup.

The mobo+cpu did not do this, as the card worked fine with a nvidia-8776 R5E50 Knoppmyth install.

I can still use text mode [ctrl,alt,f1] but, X is just a weird yellow pattern.

Any ideas? This is fun :)

My log states I'm using 9746. The entire log is as follows:

Might be a network card issue, I've seen a similar problem here:
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/e ... ist=mythtv
with HD stuff having video and audio corruption when playing from a front end. Dunno if it is the same but if you have a PCI network card handy it might be worth a shot if you are using onboard now...
