Hi, I just recently started using knoppmyth and found that everything worked fine for setup, but I want to install the following programs (amsn, kde, k3b, Firefox) and every time i would do this, it would break X regardless of program. I'm using C7, is there anyone that has any information to fix this or know what going on?
Thanks,

i had the same problem. you see C7 uses the old XFree86, but the programs you are trying to install needs the newer xorg system.

once i upgraded to the newer R5E50 (which uses xorg), i was able to apt-get many programs without problem.

i have not had any of the stupid apt-get error messages/problems since upgrading.

Is there anything I should be aware of when I upgrade i.e. lost settings and such?

as my hard disk was failing, i just got a new drive and installed R5E50 from scratch.

reading thru the forum, a backup is recommended before preforming the upgrade, then a restore is done.

there may be other things to do. please double check previous posts before proceeding.

there is an excellent sticky at the top of the hints & tips section that may be of some help.

Yes. Please see the R5E50 Upgrade hints and hazards thread for more information than you probably ever wanted on this topic. 45 updates and counting...
