I believe the problem is related to Myth and not your hardware.

When I was running R5C7, I rarely if ever had this problem. (Myth v19)

I still run an R5C7 box, which never does it... and two R5E50 boxes, both of which do it repeatedly, but not constantly...

I'm running R5D1 and it is .19 - however I have this problem also, so D1 isn't a 'fix'.

Update on this :
Tonight I installed ubuntu 6.10 desktop and mythtv + plugins...

All was working great (watching livetv) for about 2 hours (got thru about 3 program changes) and then the dreaded error "Error Was encountered while displaying video"

Ive now just realised that ubuntu is based on debian (as is knoppix) - so im not really sure im testing that much...
I'll have to try a different distro based on another provider - thinking of either mandriva or Fedora Core. If the same error is happening in all of these then its either a mythtv bug or a hardware issue.

Ok Tonight I tried again - this time i built from scratch Mythdora and surprise surprise "Error Was encountered while displaying video" occured at program change aftr a couple of hours without hitch

So thats knoppix (knoppmyth), ubuntu and fedora core all tried but none successfully watch livetv without "Error Was encountered while displaying video"

So thats kind of ruling out the OS as a culprit and leaving mythtv as the most likely candidate.

Ok, last night i downloaded the ISO for Knoppmyth R5C7 burn it and installed it....

Left it running watching LiveTV for several hours and ...

surprise surprise "Error Was encountered while displaying video" occured

Arrrgggghh !!!

Again it seems to be the same problem... excpert from backend.log

Again its falling over at the file switch time in watching LiveTV (i.e on the schedule program change)

I'm really starting to think this could be hardware but i dont know where to take it.... other than replacing the mobo and/or processor...

Im concerned about doing this because

1) I dont see any link in hardware from other people experiencing this...

2) I also think i must be in the minority (possibly extreme minority) if this issue has been present since R5C7 and more people are not experiencing it.

I'm wondering if it could be a chipset issue on the motherboard?

EDIT :

If added the output from mythfrontend run in an xterm - its a little different from r5e50 but the error looks the same

Well I found a program to test the file system, I'm as yet to figure out how to interprate the results.. I got it from apt, called Bonnie++ maybe run and compare results?

I have an ASUS P4P-800E Delux motherboad with the Intel 865PE Chipset . 2x 512mb matched pair kingston ram and a Western Digital Sata I drive. Have split that up with LVM and running EXT3 on the /myth partition.

Not sure where else to look as of yet! Might buy a new hdd soon and do a fresh install. 500GB drives are like $200 (AU$) so thats darn cheap!

Your post has made be wonder about disk IO - is it possible my hard disk is not fast enough ?

Its a *brand new* PATA 250Gb Samsung 7200rpm disk.
I doing some further testing, this time ive switched the acoustic management from the disk from "Quiet" to "Fast"

I'll report back if this makes any difference.

Would seem to indicate it needs a little more time cushion to make the file changeover...

This would seem a workaround for people other than my wife who is a prolific channel surfer.

To me this makes it some type of a timing problem that should be resolvable with some code tweaks on the code that buffers the playback.
Unfortunately I am not all that familiar with the code that controls this area.

Isn't there a buffer adjustment in TV Settings? I wonder if there could be a setting in common with these problems?

Yes there is a buffer size adjustment, I believe making it larger makes the problem worse, and making it smaller defeats the purpose of the buffer in the first place (introduces stuttering)

This error ocurred again tonight. Right away I switched to Watch Recordings and two instances of the failed program showed up in the list. The first was about 10 seconds of the program that I never saw live. The second instance was a 'blank' file (These blank shows happen to me when I don't get a signal in time to LOCK, but I've never had a problem on this channel.)

After trying to view both recordings, both of them deleted themselves. I've never seen this before. They didn't expire as I have other, older LIVE TV shows that have Auto Expire set. I don't know why these recordings deleted themselves, or why there was a duplicate, or why there was a blank.

This is what the mythbackend.log shows for this error. It happend @ 20:00 as the NCAA BB came to an end.
