I am not argueing 128 megs of RAM iis enough... I am giong to upgrade when I get around to it.. however.. I would say a P3 800 should be enough to run myth on using hardware encoding/decoding (pvr 350). When I look at my CPU load .. I look decently fine. the problem has got to be the memory.

I'm new to this whole thing and I’m trying to find everything that I need to keep my box functional through these threads. I have an ASUS mb with a p4 3.4ghz processor and 2 gig of ram with a pvr-500 and a nvidia fx 5300 video card. I'm running version R5D1 (I couldn't get the fixes to work for the poor tv quality on R5E50). When its up and running its amazing and I've fallen in love with the system. But every 6 or so shutdowns causes a boot lockup. It goes to the boot splash screen and doesn't go any further. I figured that since I’m new to all of this that I somehow didn't setup the box properly or that there is something else that I was missing but it seems a lot like the problems listed in this thread. Does anyone have a walkthrough for someone with limited linux experience to use that file system rebuild?

Hi,

Silly question on my part but are you sure it is a lockup? It sounds like you are using the splash with the blue line? If so you can press the esc key to have a window on what is happening. It may be just going through a file check which takes a few moments. If the window doesn't open then it may very well have an issue.

You have at least 1 gig of memory that is basiclly wasted. The needs of your system with the 500 card should not even require 500 meg :)

Since this is a different topic you may wish to start your own post. Give the folks details of what you do, what you see, (and don't see) and I am sure someone will be able to further assist. R5D1 was a rather good release with only some pvr-350 issues which does not apply here with the 500 card.

In my humble opinion, the R5C7 is the best beginners install. Only one small tweak needed for long term usage.

Mike

Hi

Who really cares, it works and is a good place to start :) But to answer the question, I think it is .18 Once you are up and running, do a backup and then upgrade & restore. Worse thing that will happen is you will learn more each time.

well i am running a frontend on my xbox and need to match up the versions. otherwise, i don't really care what version i am using. although, there are a lot of changes from 0.18 to 0.20. i really like how it saves live tv automatically.

I've had the same issues from time to time. I am running a Athlon XP with a Nforce2 though. Did the tweaks. I get a lockup on mythfrontend. I've done alt-sysrq-b which i now realize was real stupid. My system rebooted with readonly filesystem. running fsck moved important stuff to lost+found.

Anyway, http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews ... leId=19672

read this for a safer key combination to get out of lockups.

now my tmp is still missing and video device is missing, but its running great as the master backend. Just no mythfrontend :(

Also, time got wacked somehow. Point is, you can have very similar problems with an nforce2 athaon xp2100 and 512mb of pc2100.

Thank you all very much. I reloaded my box again but I’m getting very good at setting up my box lol. I'm making myself a list of all of the issues I’ve ran into so far and adding some newbie notes so hopefully it will save me some time and every one else aggravation of trying to break instructions down for me lol. Thanks again.
