Hi,

I am looking for a program to play, and/or edit, Myth PVR-x50 files (supposedly basic MPEG2 files) on my Windows box. I would like to share my skydiving videos I dubbed onto Myth with Windows users.

I tried my favorite program, VLC, but the current build 0.8.6b is sadly a basketcase. It plays the files too fast and with a sound hiccup every several seconds. It also can't seem to transcode anything into a Windows Media Player playable file right now.

I tried playing it with Quicktime 7.1.5, but I get "Error -2048, the file is not a movie file." Sure... it's not like the most ubiquitous type of movie file in use today!

I tried playing it with WMP11, but I got the typical "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file." It doesn't seem to be able to play any videos these days, maybe that is their new DRM feature.

I'm at a loss, and it would be helpful if someone could point me to a free or low cost player and/or editor for MPEG2 files on Windows.

Thanks.

Thanks Marc,

I tried your first directive and it failed for me
Code:
$ivtvctl --set-vbi=none
ioctl IVTV_IOC_S_VBI_PASSTHROUGH failed: Invalid argument

So I figured I might be able to skip 2 and 3, and do only 4
In myth-setup>general>3rd screen>VBI capture from “NTSC-VBI to “NTSC

And now the file plays fine with VLC.

It's sad the VLC maintainers are dismissing this as someone else's problem, and not addressing a fix for their software. Regardless of whether it is IVTV or VLC, you have found other software players tolerate the files fine, and the service at issue aids people with disabilities. It seems reading the VLC forums this a common response to issues, and it doesn't engender a happy and loyal user base.

Colinnwn, thanks for the update. I use R5D1, which uses an older version of the IVTV drivers, so that's probably why the ivtvctl command didn't work. Having said that, it looks like the myth folks changed myth so that it actually tells IVTV to not capture VBI when you configure it that way, which is a nice improvement and makes the manual call to ivtvctl unnecessary.

I was a bit disappointed by the response I received from the VLC developers, but it is their product so they get to make their choices. I've cut over to mplayer and all is working well.

I have a pvr250 and on my Windows box I install the KLite codec pack. Then use the included 'Media Player Classic' and the recordings play fine.

Does mplayer classic do deinterlacing and have a 30-second skip forward / 10-second skip backward function?

Since mplayer is a pretty versitile player in Linux, I tried it in Windows 2000. I tried version "MPlayer 1.0rc1 Windows" and a GUI interface called "MPlayer 1.0rc1 Windows GUI". Both were downloaded from:
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html

This particular version has an aspect ratio problem where every file you play is horizontally stretched, so it looks abnormally wide. I don't see any aspect ratio controls in this GUI, so I guess it is what it is and there is no fixing it.

I'm not sure if the problem lies in the GUI interface or the version of mplayer for Windows. Any idea if Windows version 1.0rc1 has a known problem with aspect ratio?

If the problem is the GUI interface, is there a better Windows GUI for Mplayer someone would recommend?

UPDATE:

I just found another GUI frontend for mplayer that plays videos with the correct aspect ratio!! It can be found at:
http://mpui.sourceforge.net/

Best wishes!

I'm using media player classic. It's got no problems with playing recordings copied from mythtv. I did have to get the codec pack though, but I think I found it all on videohelp.com.

The homepage listed on the toolbar is http://gabest.org/
