hello people,

im a fair newb at this but here goes.
Ive got a working r5c7 box in my theatre,ive got 2 new boxes i want to use as frontends, ive read page after page and thought i had it kinda sussed, WRONG! i tried doing an auto install and get this error;

ERROR formatting of /dev/hda1 failed some messages from mlcfs.ext3: mke2fs 1.36 (05 feb-2005) mkfs.ext3: no such device or address while trying to determine filesystem size

So i thought i'd do a frontend only install and cant get it to connect to the backend, i can ping the box but myth wont connect, i edited out hte networking line also. ANY HELP APPRECIATED :D

can someone please tell me what to type in to manually partition my HD, i cannot get he autoinstal to work and im too much of an idiot to manual instal, i just cant get past this point. Working from the CD (because im only setting up a frontend) is an option it works but ive only got output to a monitor not my plasma and i have no sound. Due to it not writing anything to the HD im assuming i cant reconfigure the file for tv output
Ive googled my problem till the keys have worn out and im really lost :?

sorry im installing r5c7

If there are any Linux/myth gurus in perth Australia im HAPPY to pay someone to come set up 2 boxes with frontends please PM me.

Hi,

I'd help, but i'm in Brisbane :-(

If you only want to install a front end, try this.

You can use the CD as a boot cd, try getting to a command prompt.
There is a command called cfdisk that will allow you to partition your hard drive.
Create a partition on /dev/hda, make it ext3, this should then become /dev/hda1.
Once you are happy that this is done, reboot the PC and do an auto upgrade instead of auto install.

As far as connecting to the master backend, there are topics on the knoppmythwiki site that details this. Basically you need to change a few settings on the master as well.

Why are you installing such an old version?

What type of drives are in these machines? If they are SATA then you will definitely need a newer version of Knoppmyth.

thanks for the replys guys,

yes its a sata drive and im on an older version because thats what is set up on my backend/frontend machine, which is running sweet and has the whole ir blaster for a STB setup, there is no way i can do that all again, i had alot of outside assistance then and have none atm. Dont get me wrong this is magic when its running, im just extremly frustrated with this install at the moment

im sure the settings for connection to the backend are easy, i have had the diskless frontend going i just think i cant change any of hte modlines for sound and video output that way.

Is it a MUST to upgrade if its a SATA drive?

Yes. If you want to install KM on a SATA disk, you have to use at least R5E50, which is the first release that included a SATA installed. What's with the old KnoppMyth? Are you on dialup or a restricted bandwidth plan?

cheers

Mike

not at all, its already been running for at least a year, its what we put on at time thats all, how hard is the upgrade, will my capture cards/ir blaster/EPG/sound & video output all need to be setup again?

Hi,

tjc usually posts a how-to upgrade when a new release comes out. There is a backup option that backs up /root/, /home/mythtv/, /etc/ along with relavent mythtv stuff. The auto-upgrade wipes everything on /dev/hda1 and installs new (thus the backup). Each new release is better at detecting hardware than the last (as a general rule), and includes new kernel versions which helps with drivers.

But, there is always a chance that something is missed. especially any personal scripts you have written, modifications you have made that are against the norm.

I feel every new release makes considerable advancements, but if you can't risk a few days down time if things go wrong, I would stay put, especially if you are happy with your current setup.

I have seen some motherboards with onboard SATA that have a backwards compatabilty mode in the bios, this may help with installing R5C7 on SATA. You could give this a try, before you upgrade everything to R5E50.

BigB.

Hi,

On a backend (or backend/frontend combination) the system is on /dev/hda1, swap is (i think) on /dev/hda2 and the main storage is on /dev/hda3 (or put simply three different partitions on the primary drive). Knoppmyth is a distro of linux, but the thinking behind it is more like HTPC "firmware". So a firmware upgrade wipes the system code and replaces it with a new one. The recordings are safely left on /dev/hda3 (or where ever you may put them).

There are ways to manually upgrade parts of the install (EG the kernel, or the mythtv software itself) but usually covered elsewhere.

Another option could be to install R5E50 on your new frontend. But due to an incompatibility between the version of mythtv used on these two releases, you would have to upgrade the mythtv software on your R5C7 machine. The process to do this is also on the knoppmythwiki site, there is also a script available on the forum that upgrades the Mythtv version of R5D1 to later releases, with care, this could be used with R5C7.

BigB.

thanks bigB

ive read all the upgrade documentation, seems fairly easy, BUT if it goes wrong its going to put me out as a fair few of my bits were tweaked and im not sure how it was all done anymore. might need to:
1. see if a r5e50 will walk onto my frontend machine
2. see where all my EPG/IR blaster files are stored, if they are backed up it should be all good

if thats all good, my worst problem may be my video and audio output

will research some more...i never researched anywhere near this much at school, sheeesh
