Home >> Watch TV now results in a blackscreen for 30 seconds and returns to the menu. Initially it drew the error: Is the backend running? Does the backend have the right IP address (it was 127.0.0.1)

An ifconfig shows that the machine is configured to 192.168.2.20, so I changed both instances of 127.0.0.1 to 192.168.2.20 in the 'Host Address Backend Setup' page. Both the front and back end are on the same machine.

When I invoke ALT+S, MythTV warns me that it has detected that the backend is running :) It continues with an incomplete message: Changing existing card inputs, deleting anything or scanning for channels may not ....

As a newbie, I am trying to take due diligence and search for answers and experimenting before posting. My original intent was to determine if WatchTV would allow me to view TV in real time from the Hauppauge PVR 500 tuner. Any guidance as to:

1) have I set the IP addresses appropriately in 'Host Address Backend Setup'?
2) Is there a quick test to prove the PVR 500 tuners and drivers are working?
3) Do I somehow have to tell the front end the new IP addresses?

I ran the Channel scanner and I think that it is scanning the tuner to see what channels are coming in strong. I am not really sure how to interpret the data, however, I am hoping that this would validate that the drivers are working with the Hauppauge tuner. If I could watch video, that would be the real test.

Thanks to those that have supported this quest!

You only need to change the IP if you are going to use a second computer as a remote front end.

If that's not the case you should change both instances back to 127.0.0.1.

You can get the "is the backend running" message if you haven't filled the database with channel data. Have you done that part yet?

I believe that I have run 'mythfilldatabase' successfully, because I can see the channel data in the Program guide.

Is there a 'quick and dirty' test to prove the Hauppauge tuner?

Update: I just bounced the backend with:

/etc/init.d/mythtv-backend start

Now I can watch live TV! Now onto recording!!!! :)

You need to say restart to bounce it. You may want to check that there's only one instance running:
Code:
pgrep -fl backend

Should only show one process.

Thank you for introducing that command. That should come in handy. I actually ran:

/etc/init.d/mythtv-backend stop

before I ran:

/etc/init.d/mythtv-backend start
