Interesting. What version were you upgrading from and how did you make the backup? What (if anything) do you have in your "/myth/backup/restore.list" file? I'd also like a listing of your /myth/backup directory if possible...

I suspect that the system is probably usable, since I don't see anything fatal there. The democracy player stuff will all get repopulated, Don't know anbbout the MythPhone stuff.

Oh and thanks, we haven't had much luck up to now getting people who had a failure to provide this info. :D

Hi all,

I had exactly the same problem with my upgrade from e50 to f1

It reported the same failiure when restoring. I only had an hour b4 the gf's programs had to be recorded so panic set in. :oops:

I had done a backup using the menu in e50 to generate the backup and it said the backup was complete.

having intalled f1 and gone into the frontend there was nothing in my recordings menu so i did a restore from the menu and it said it had failed.

I rebooted and after that everything was ok all recordings videos etc were there ??

:)

Other than that everything went fine my lirc and xorg conf file seemed to have be restored so the only thiong i had to set up was samba and webmin

Sounds like you had the delayed backend restart issue rather than a real failure. The 2nd manual restore was probably unnecessary. See the R5F1 hints and hazards posting, Known Issue #1.

OK, here's the story on the false alarms from the restore sanity checking.

In older versions both /home/mythtv/.democracy and /home/mythtv/.mythtv/MythPhone were real directories that live under /home/mythtv which put them in the (smallish) root partition. Both of these can get big so somewhere along the line Cecil moved them under /myth and replaced them with symbolic links to the new location.

The restore does the right thing, and the subdirectories and files end up in the new location, but the checking doesn't (and shouldn't for reasons I won't go into here) follow symbolic links so it doesn't see them, thus producing a false alarm.

If the differences in your /var/log/restore.log logfile match the ones described there, you can safely ignore the error. I'm still trying to come up with a good clean & robust fix for this.

Since I haven't played with either of these modules I never saw this case come up, and nobody who had restore errors posted the output from their restore checking until the mighty and honorable elephant (bless his trunk and tusks!) shone a light into this dark corner.

it also appears that my mythconverg.sql.gz file was empty, and in hindsight, this is likely due to me assigning a new root password to mysql... (with i could remember 100%, but i think this must be the reason)... I was upgrading from R5C7, with "successful" backups created from the frontend menu... i just mention this in case it will help someone else... if this is the wrong place, i apologize in advance, feel free to move it.

Yeah, that would probably do it. And since neither the dump nor the select produced anything they would match... :? Sigh... Maybe I should add an extra check that the counts are not all 0... :|

Got an error doing an auto-upgrade from R5C7 to R5F1. The backed up files restored fine, but it appears that the DB didn't. Here's what I think is the pertinent section of the restore.log. Would appreciate any help with this. Thanks.

That looks pretty nasty... For some reason it doesn't think that your file contains valid SQL statements.

Lets start with the contents of your /myth/backup directory:

Next lets look at the head of your mysql dump. If your mythconverg.sql is compressed differently use the appropriate tool... If you have multiple files it'll look at them in the order; .gz, .bz2, and finally uncompressed. My memory says that the default compression in R5C7 is bzip2.

The 1GB uncompressed one listed first seems to be the one from today's backup before I started the upgrade. I assume you want to look at that file so I'll need to know the command to get what you want from it. Or is there a problem with it since it's not compressed? I'm curious why it isn't compressed and why that one from June 3rd of last year doesn't have a number at the end??

Yeah, that's the problem... It found the old compressed one before the newer uncompressed one. As for the numbered files, they're the old backups from the automatic rollover, and yours look a bit odd. The dates and numbers for the mythconverg.sql and savedfiles.tar files don't match up. BTW - The hints posting warns about this, both in Known Changes 1.2 and Phase 0 step 1.3, and even provides example commands to check for it.

To fix this, make a subdirectorty called old and move everything but the newest file set into it. Then touch /home/mythtv/.upgrade as the mythtv user and reboot. This will rerun the phase 2 setup including the restore and should get you back in good shape. Something like this should do the trick (untested):

TJC, thanks for your help. Really appreciate it. I had read your hints posting including the sections you reference several times, but it still wasn't clear to me if mine was okay or not. I think I assumed that if I didn't have bz and gz versions of the backups I was ok.

Anyway, last night (before your post this morning), I got anxious and ended up re-installing R5C7. The auto-upgrade of it spent a couple hours restoring the db but it still wouldn't load so I ended up restoring the db directory from a mondo backup I had made yesterday. That got me back going (after re-enabling sql networking in the my.cnf file). So I'm about to try the upgrade again.

Something confusing to me though. I ran mythbackup as root from a prompt and it completed in a couple of minutes. So I ran it again from the Myth menu and it took over an hour (running bzip most of the time). IIRC, that's typical (at least for me), I'm just not sure what's different between running it from a prompt and the menu. The menu xml file looks like it just sudo runs the same mythbackup script.

After running it from the menu, the pertinent sections of my /myth/backup directory is as follows:

What stands out odd to me here is that mythconverg.sql.bz2 file with a Jun 26 2006 date. If you look at my old listing above there was one there with that date but it was only 28KB. The new one is 18MB. Don't know where that came from.

Anyway, I said all that for posterity and you can comment if you like. I'd like to start the upgrade again. Will do what you suggested this morning concerning moving everything except the current file set into a subdir. Just to clarify, what should be left in the /myth/backup dir after the move is the uncompressed mythconverg.sql dump file and savedfiles.tar.bz2. Is that correct? Thanks again.

If you remove or rename the old mythconverg.sql.bz2 it should actually find the right versions of the files.

To deal with backups in multiple historical formats the current version of the restore script tries to determine the compressed/uncompressed format of each of the files. However it's not all that smart and when confronted with multiple possiblities it just goes with the first one it finds.

For mythconverg.sql it tries in order:
    - mythconverg.sql.gz - gzip compression
    - mythconverg.sql.bz2 - bzip2 compression
    - mythconverg.sql - uncompressed

For savedfiles.tar it tries in order:
    - savedfiles.tar.gz - gzip compression
    - savedfiles.tar.bz2 - bzip2 compression
    - savedfiles.tar - uncompressed


If you make sure that you only have one of those three formats for each base file name or make sure that the desired file will be found before any older rivals it will do the right thing.
