I am interested in adding an IR receiver and using it with a Philips Pronto remote.

When selecting an IR receiver, what are the important considerations in decision making? I think that I would prefer USB, because it avoids having to setup a 232 com port. In addition, it would be nice if it is already supported by KM.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I use 3 of the serial IR receivers from http://www.irblaster.info/receiver.html Work great on my R5D1 systems, never had any problem with them. Nothing much involved in configuring them either, a quick search on these forums will reveal any tricks.

Do you have a cable STB, therefore requiring an IR Blaster?

I do not use a cablebox today: however, that may change in the future. Thank you for the link to irblaster.

You might try the StreamZap if you are looking for a USB device. It's cheap. I have it working with the TiVo remote, so the receiver will work with other remotes. Also, KnoppMyth has great support for the StreamZap.

I read the posting: StreamZap receiver with different remote? How did you get it to work with TIVO remote?
