I'm using R5D1 an xine work for me right after install. It works with menus and so on. Better even, can play NTSC and PAL DVD's. I had to edit lirc.conf to add support for the remote, but otherwise it is working fine. So I send my old DVD player in storage - don't need it anymore.
About encripted dvd's... google around and there is solutions to that problem too.

You totally missed the clue in the post right before yours. (not reading before posting?)
There is no need to look elsewhere. The answer to the encrypted dvd question is in this very thread - page 1.

This post should be updated, cause the example file no longer exists in R5F1.

I figured it out after a bit of searching.

Couldn't figure out what package needed to get installed...

The filename isn't the same any more, but there are only a few possibilities to look at...
