I had installed/played with Knoppmyth about a year ago on my nForce-2 chipset motherboard (Athlon XP 2000+, GeForce 5200 videocard, Dvico Fusion Gold+ tuner card) and had it working. I shelved the system as I lost interest but dug it out again this past week. I installed a new 250GB hard drive and installed from an R5F1 CD.
I haven't been able to get a peep out of the tuner card--can't find channels, no signal lock, no audio at all. I looked at the dmesg file and saw the following (snipped from the larger file):

What is this file trying to tell me, and where do I fix the problem?

Over a day, lots of reads and no responses. Surely I can't be the only person to have this happen to them...?
I wonder, though...on the last version of KnoppMyth I used, when I did a manual install, there was an option to perform an installation for AMD CPU/motherboards and now I don't see it when I install. Even though the install seems to detect the nForce mobo, could this be the problem? How would I select or install the "586" or "686" versions now?

I'm pretty sure the 686 version is deprecated now, it didn't offer any real advantages over the 586 (used by default).

I blasted the install and tried installing R5B7 with the same results. I could go back to A30 (the last working version on this system) but there were a few issues with making my tuner card work right, as I recall.
does anyone know if there's some sort of interactive startup I can run (ala Windows) so that I can step through the modules as they load and find out exactly where its dying?

Someone else had a problem like this here, here and when shutting down, here.
It appears the only way to solve this is remove/rename the module.

Bruce, thanks for the pointers. I'd done some searches but I don't think I would've found those posts. So from what I'm reading, Alsa was 'upgraded' at some point but now has a bug concerning the pcHDTV card types, and the author/maintainer won't fix it or doesn't know how?
This is very disappointing...my Fusion 5 Gold is capable of tuning analog--in Windows it's supposed to work with analog cable and broadcast as well as digital. I wanted to try and set the card up to do both.
Well, I suppose I'll have to sit with this solution for a while.
NEWS: I followed the instructions and, lo and behold, everything seems to load w/no errors. Now its giving me an 'authentication error' on the root password when it restarts, and I haven't even assigned one yet. >* sigh *< It can never be simple, can it?

1) The "authentication error" I was getting in the second part of the install/setup when providing a root password only happens if I use the "manual install." Also during manual install, I'm never asked for many of the informational pieces (username, root password, et cetera) during the text-based, first part of the install. Wierd...but a reinstall using Auto Install fixed the error.
2) In doing some research on this topic (since I knew what to look for ) I stumbled onto this thread:
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=14703
as it promised to correct the problem without disabling analog sound on the Dvico Fusion 5 Gold. It might have been good as of R5E50, but doesn't work in R5F1. The line is already present in /etc/modutils/alsa-base in R5F1. I had not blacklisted cx88_alsa when I tried adding the line. Is there another workaround/fix for analog audio that I'm missing?

Odd. I'll have to see about duplicating this... You can boot off the CD and change the password in cases like this. Quit from the menu after booting.
Code: mount -o rw /dev/sda1 /media/sda1 chroot /media/sda1 passwd exit umount /media/sda1 reboot

Cecil,
Thanks for the input. Just to let you know, I wiped the install again this morning as I'd fudged up lirc, and chose the 'Auto Install' option before leaving the room. When I came back I was told the program had installed and wanted to reboot. The problem was that it didn't ask me for passwords, et cetera in the first part of the install, just as in manual install the other day. I rebooted from the CD, again chose 'Auto Install,' and this time was asked to provide the passwords and other info.
Weird. Just an FYI as I was able to reinstall.

Harbinger...
Sounds like you have had several encounters with what I like to call "the randomizer," which is resident on every computing platform known to man.

Better that than the "Central Scrutinizer," I 'spose.
