I need to upgrade my mythbox. I would like some suggestions for how to do this.

The PC has 2 hard drives, one EIDE and the other SATA. Both drives are 120GB each. R5E50 is installed in a small partition on one. The rest of that drive and all of the other are joined into one file system using LVM and XFS.

The big one is mounted as /myth. It has several months of TV recordings.

There is one kworld digital tuner card. The system thinks it is the second tuner even though it's the only one. When I first built the PC it also had an old bt848 card which has since been removed.

I want to upgrade to the latest version of KnoppMyth. Along the way I'd like to move the system to one big SATA drive, to increase available space and to halve the risk of drive failure. (If one of those drives dies, the whole system is buggered.) Also it would simplify adding a backup mirror when the drives get cheaper.

Another goal is to convince the PC that it has only one tuner and that it is tuner #1. Maybe I could just add another card. But I'm afraid it'll then appear as cards #2 and #3 with no card #1.

One more goal is to make digital sound output work again. It had worked before, but then I messed it up somehow while trying to input sound from that bt848 card. I think a fresh install might help with that.

Both of those other goals are secondary and not critical.

I don't particularly care about replicating every little detail of my current setup. I just want it all moved and upgraded, and have all of my shows survive the journey. It's okay if the various paths and menus and stuff change.

I assume that the current setup would be a temporary fallback in case installation on the new drive goes wrong. I'd like to avoid messing up the current drives until the migration is done.

Can anyone tell me the best way to go about this? Is it possible to do a clean install on the new drive, then copy the video files over and restore a few database tables? Are there any other threads on this board that would help with the details?

(Note that I have read tjc's R5F27 hints and bookmarked that thread.)

Thanks!!

Take a look at posts 2->6 on the link below. It's a discussion between TJC and myself about doing something similar. That thread was originally created to help people upgrade to R5C7, but the ideas in posts 2->6 are release independent. The are some differences in what you are doing and what is outlined there, but I suspect you can develop a strategy starting with those notes.
