I've used the MythTv Player for Windows on my windows machine and it works great. I was wondering if anyone knows of a similar program for Linux (I'm running Ubuntu on my laptop). Since I use the laptop for other stuff I don't want to run a frontend, I just want a window to play myth recordings in.

The link for MythTv Player is http://www.sudu.dk/mythtvplayer/ if you're not familiar with it.

Thanks!

Michael

Since you have Ubuntu, install the mythtv-frontend package.

Thanks for the quick response (and all your hard work with KnoppMyth).

I thought about doing that, but would I be able to run it in a window so I could multitask while I'm watching recordings?

Share your recordings directory on the backend via Samba, then mount the Samba shares onto your laptop and play the MPEGs with VLC/Mplayer/Xine/whatever.

Thanks slowtolearn - I did try that method and got video playback, but was unable to fast forward to rewind using Totem Movie Player. After being spoiled with Myth's commercial skipping I couldn't stand not being able to skip the commercials.. Maybe I'm missing a setting somewhere?

The frontend can run in a window.

I got the frontend installed and working, but I can't dynamically resize the window. I know I'm being picky :) I got spoiled by MythTv Player. I don't need all the overhead of the frontend, I just want something to play the recordings. So I'm guessing there's nothing like MythTv Player for linux..

Wouldn't MythStream do the trick?

Google for mythviewer

It is what you are looking for and I believe a user on this forum that goes by the nickname/handle of Grante is the developer.
I've been using it for awhile now with no problems.

Since MythTV has a upnp server now another option could be to use djmount to mount the upnp content as a directory tree. Then you can use any media player you want to play the files.
